The functional role of Support Personnel

The function and work of support personnel to the immigrants is very extensive and active at the Lahti Parish Council. New basic courses are organised approximately once a year. Regular monthly meetings are organised to the volunteers. They provide situations which are educational as well as happenings where consultation and support is needed. Support personnel are provided with peer group support, information and refreshment activities.

The importance of support personnel is extremely important when new immigrants are settling down. The Finnish support person is offering a safe and reliable relationship and an opportunity to learn and speak Finnish language. In addition to that support person is serving and opening a door to the Finnish society and culture. The interaction and sharing is mutual and everybody is treated as equals and being foreign is respected.
